Monique Madrid Settles for the Sea

monique madridPeople are always coming up to me and asking, “Monique, how did you get your dream job?” And the answer is simple; I’m not working my dream job. My dream job is to be LL Cool J’s personal love goddess. Is being the mistress of an outdated rapper who’s old enough to be my father the right career move for me? I don’t know, but I’ve dreamed of it since I was 13 years old and am determined to make it come true. Unfortunately, my weekly letters remain unanswered. While I pursue (stalk) LL, I have settled for a job that’s pretty awesome, too. Over the last year and a half, I have been fortunate enough to live on a cruise ship and perform sketch and improv comedy for honeymooners and retirees (while getting to vacation myself) in Alaska, the Caribbean and now in Hawaii as a cast member for the famed The Second City Theater.

When I’m not working this grueling 10 hours a week job, I have a lot of down time. Occasionally, when I’m lucky, some silly video idea comes to me. Then if I can get my ass off the beach I periodically shoot these videos.  On the off chance that I can tear myself away from the umbrella drinks, I’ll even edit these videos. You’re welcome.

Anyways, when you’re living on a ship for 4 months at a time, two basic types of sketch ideas typically come to mind:  1. buffet food themed or 2. actually funny ones. On any given day, you never know which will strike you, so I do my best to write as much as possible. Who knows, maybe someday LL Cool J will watch one, fall madly in love with the lead girl and come sweep me off my feet. And this is the real reason I write, so that some day I will be able to live out my real dream job.
